The New Royals Stadium Will Cost Kansas Citians More Than Originally Reported
Original Announced Public Funding Didn’t Include Interest
The city of Kansas City, who had originally announced that the public would be on the hook for $600 million going towards the new Royals stadium, have now clarified that the public will actually be on the hook for $1.3 billion.
The extra $700M is because the city will need to take out loans to fund the stadium and with those loans comes $700M in interest and fees.
According to KSHB, Councilman Jonathan Duncan said “I think before today, some of my colleagues didn’t understand the public commitment is twice what the principal is going to be.” He continued, “Essentially, we’re taking out loans on a taxpayer dime to pay for a stadium, and those loans come with interest.”
The bright side of this is, in our opinion, this new “realization” along with public pressure after the stadium decision was not brought to a vote + more and more city council members starting to get suspicious of the speed at which this is going -- might halt stadium production within the next year.
