The Chiefs Free Agent Signing Process Is Getting Hard To Ignore

Is there anyone that the Chiefs wouldn’t consider signing?

It’s starting to get hard to ignore the things about consistent Chiefs signees that the organization themselves, consistently ignore.

Justin Tucker, who was signed to the Chiefs practice squad earlier today, has not played in the NFL since January 4th of 2025. Is that because he had the 2nd worst field goal percentage in the league that season and by far the worst of his career? No.

The reason he hasn’t played football since the 24/25 season is because he was suspended 10 games by the NFL for violating their ‘personal conduct policy’. The NFL, known for letting players off easy who allegedly participate in the kind of acts I’m about to get into (sometimes even resulting in you getting the highest paid, and guaranteed, contract in the history of the league), suspended Tucker after 16 separate massage therapists came forward with sexual misconduct allegations.

Allegations that end in suspension, conviction, settlement, or otherwise, have never scared off the Chiefs; or most NFL teams to be fair. Though after the NFL’s investigation and suspension of Tucker -- considered one of the best kickers in the history of the league -- no team has pulled the trigger on signing him. He has been done with his suspension and available since November of 2025.

“”He’s done his suspension and took care of that business,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday. “I’ll leave it at that. We try to do our homework the best way we possibly can and talk to a lot of people and make sure things are OK.”“ (via ESPN)

Some part of me does feel bad, or maybe frustrated is a better word, that Andy Reid has to be the one answering questions for a move that much more closely involves Brett Veach and the rest of the Chiefs front office and ownership. But I also can’t ignore that Reid has had his own history of sticking by people who have done reprehensible things and either contributing to or benefiting off of miscarriages of justice.

So when I hear Reid say “To bring him in here, I did some homework. He’s here and he’s on the practice squad, so we roll with it.” I can’t help but feel like I’m rewatching the same thing take place over and over again where there’s no accountability in football unless there’s video.

And sometimes even video isn’t enough.
